This was a post that I created last year after a very busy few weeks. For some reason it never posted but looking through my ‘draft’ posts I found it and re-read it. A lot has changed since I wrote this but I thought I would share it anyways. Hope you enjoy.
So, another work trip was on the horizon. This was after three stag trips on the bounce. Two one weekend after the other. The first was a visit to London which was a swuarve trip to a Jazz night at a famous jazz club, unfortunately this famous name fails me at the moment. I’m not a keen follow of Jazz but I do know that this guy was famous in the international Jazz scene. Great weekend with great people. This was followed by the wedding for which I was fortunate enough to photograph. You can see the pictures here.
The next trip was a stag party to Hamburg. I’ve only ever visited Germany once when I went to Berlin about 4 years ago. Loved Berlin and I had heard that Hamburg had its own ‘reputation’. I was looking forward to this trip as I wanted to know what this infamous ‘Reaperbarn’ was about. The stags brother had organised the trip and with knowing him I knew that it was going to be a good trip. The highlight of the trip was the ‘beer bike’ and the the now infamous ‘being-ripped-off-by-a-hooker’ night, of which three of my friends had found out. Tut-tut. You know who you are :-). But overall a great weekend and great memories. Again I was fortunate to to be able to photograph the wedding also. You can also see the photographs here.
The following weekend I was to go on another stag do to Munich for the much loved Springfest. Not as big as the famous Octoberfest but it has the same principle. Again, this stag do was with a friend for whom I have know for over 8 years. I actually know his wonderful, ‘now wife’, as we both studied together at university. I digress. The stag do was going to be a four day bender. It started on plane there and ended on the plane on the way back. It truly was great weekend. The Saturday was all about the Springfest and on Sunday the Alianz Arena. The highlight of the weekend was the numerous videos emerging of the stag, ‘whaling’, to any kind of, anything. He truly was a great drunk. Again I was fortunate enough to be able to photograph the wedding and you can view the photographs here.
The following weekend I was sent, with work, to Reus, Spain. My manager thought it would be a good idea to send me to work with one of our freelancers who has been a travel photographer for decades. It turned out that it was a great idea. This freelancer, for whom I now consider a friend, only assisted at Magnum, the photography agency. All I did for 7 days was soak up every thing that he could possibly tell me. The things is he didn’t tell me until about the 5/6th day. I just knew that the information he was giving me was priceless.
For the first 3/4 days he put me through the wringer. I was so tired it was unreal. We were up at the crack of dawn and we didn’t finish photographing until sunset. Then it was post editing etc. There wasn’t anytime to relax at all. We exchanged ideas, tips, knowledge it was a very informative and intriguing week. I know, it sounds I have my head up his backside but its an absolute revelation when someone has so much knowledge.
So, my girlfriend had not seen me for 5 weekends. Understandably, she was a little annoyed about my ‘air miles’ and boys weekends that I decided earlier in the year I would take her to Rome for a little romantic weekend. She was a little oblivious to the trip as I tried to organise the entire holiday without her knowing. The problem was trying to hide the real reason as to why we were going. All year we had been going to friends weddings and people were asking “when are you two getting married?”. The facts that we had been together 8 years only compounded the situation. A few of my friends knew of the trip and the “question”. Thankfully, on the first day in Rome my wonderful and and devoted girlfriend answered “Yes” to my ‘Question’. After a very busy year and many air miles we are to get married next August.
Finally, I have a job that I love, I have some of the most amazing friends in many different cities around the world, I have an awesome little Springer Spaniel (Frankie) and I am going to marry the most amazing, dedicated and loving women that I have ever met next year. I am a very lucky man man.
Much love x
